Alternative Movie Poster Tuesday: The Nightmare Before Christmas

29 Oct

Happy Tuesday, everyone!! Just two more days until Halloween! For this week’s Alternative Movie Poster Tuesday I wanted to look at “The Nightmare Before Christmas” alternative designs. This is one of my favorite Halloween movies and I thought for this post I’d use a bit of a different format than I usually use on Tuesdays. Each of these designs use the same image of Jack’s head to represent the movie and have a lot in common so I’ll post all of the posters and talk about some of the key differences at the end of this post.

The Sick, Twisted, Disgusting, and Terrifying: Modern Horror Movie Posters

26 Oct

Horror movie posters serve a very similar purpose to movie trailers. They advertise the movie and provide a preview. They use the same tactic as well; they generate fear but they still leave a lot to the imagination.

With horror movies posters, poster designers make use of the movie’s most frightening images of the movies’s antagonist and they feature ghastly, often disgustingly graphic shots, of the afflicted protagonists to come up with spine chilling designs.

Alternative Movie Poster Tuesday: The Shining

22 Oct

Happy Tuesday, everyone!! Just 8 more days until Halloween! For this week’s Alternative Movie Poster Tuesday I wanted to check out “The Shining.” The original poster designs are iconic and I found some really incredible redesigns as well.

There were a lot of designs to choose from and if you like these I suggest you check out the rest of the alternative movie posters. There’s a really great variety of styles and approaches. Here’s just three.

I enjoy a lot of aspects of this design. The color choice is great and the contrast with the ripped paper look is really cool. The text is still legible and this idea makes the poster super eye-catching. I also like the choice of stills showing Jack at his craziest. It also uses a similar font as the original poster and has a similar look as the black and yellow original designContinue reading

The Art of Illustration: Vintage Horror Movie Posters

19 Oct

This Halloween season got me thinking of some of the brilliant horror movie poster designs of years past. I’ll admit I’m not a huge classical film fan but I love the fantastic illustrated posters that were at one time the staple of every horror and sci-fi film. They have so much detail and can communicate so much about a film and it’s a bit of a shame that this look went of out style.

Because of the incredible workmanship many vintage horror posters are not only collectible but also very valuable. The movie poster for “Dracula,” directed by Tod Browning in 1931, set the world’s record of the most expensive movie poster at the price of $310,700 in 2009.

I’ve included some of my favorite vintage horror posters for your design inspiration and entertainment. Even if you don’t want to see “Frogs” or “The Amazing the Colossal Man” you can definitely appreciate the design and the craftsmanship involved in creating these pieces of art. I’ve included posters from as early as 1922 with “Nosferatu” to “A Nightmare on Elm Street” in 1984. I’ll feature some more recent poster designs in my later posts leading up to Halloween.
